About the Feldenkrais Method®

Imagine a learning situation in which you are completely relaxed, lying on the floor or sitting in a chair, asked to do nothing but the tiniest movements a few times and then rest. Imagine each movement in a series being introduced like this. Do a very small movement, gently and slowly a few times and then rest. Then you might be asked to put the movements that you’ve just done together and you suddenly realize that you’ve been learning to turn your head but with the cooperation of your whole body. And you’ve done it in a way that seems effortless. How you were doing it before now seems like so much work and of course it was hurting your neck or your shoulder or maybe even your lower back or hip.

Feldenkrais® brings our unconscious, hurtful patterning out of the shadow and gives the body a choice again about how to perform daily tasks, remain pain free, and improve anything you like. We begin to remember how to move efficiently, quiet down overused parts, and remember the deep pleasure of being embodied. It gives you a way to intervene in the aches and pains of daily living and even works with old injuries, chronic pain, and neurological damage. It’s good for anyone at any age for any reason.

Best of all, it provides a new model for aging. Moshe Feldenkrais said that we could improve up until the day we die. This seems like a much better model than the one of inevitable breakdown that we all unconsciously subscribe to without another philosophy to take its place.

Our training is two months a year for four years. During those years we begin to teach the floor work, mostly in classes, called Awareness Through Movement®. There are many hundreds of gentle movement sequences that the teacher can choose from and verbally guide you through. It’s the kind of learning situation and the the kind of movement that you’ve always wanted... relaxed, slow, interesting and complete, without all the extra effort. People often report feeling lighter, taller, easier in their bodies, and that somehow they’ve learned to quiet their pain. It’s good to take a series of classes so you can begin to reproduce the results on your own.

The other way that we’re trained to work is through hands-on work with a private client called Functional Integration®. In this aspect of the work, we take over the movement of the client who is lying on a padded table not doing anything. The client is free to notice where the restrictions are, or the ease, while we introduce the movement sequences directly into the nervous system. Sessions are about an hour.

It’s all very gentle and subtle work, directly appealing to the nervous system to give up patterns that are no longer helpful and to gain a new repertoire that serves you and what you want to do with your life. And, magically, the Method does all this through the vehicle of pleasure in movement.....how wonderful!
